Noun [Proto-West Germanic]

Etymology: Unknown; possibly borrowed from a substrate language. According to Kroonen, originally a Proto-Germanic paradigm *knabō (nominative singular), *knappaz (genitive singular), from a Pre-Proto-Germanic *gnobʰ-ōn (nom. sg.), *gnobʰ-nós (gen. sg.), with Kluge's law; the original meaning appears to have been “peg”, but the further origin is unclear.
